“I think is early. Early in our lives. Early in the night. Early in the new year. If you’re counting, you’ll notice the earlys out-number the lates.”
Synopsis:
Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.
Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.
When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.
Opinion:
I think I am done with depressing books, or at least books that talk about depression. Not that I don’t believe it is real or it matters, but I don’t want to hear more about it, I just want to turn the page.
It’s a cute story, about two guys that meet each other in a bad stage of their lives. Sometimes it is difficult to notice the problems the people have around you, but these books show us that if we just bypass this, people can really get mad to the point they will want to end their lives.
In summary, sometimes it was a little bit boring, but it has good quotes and some thoughts are interesting.
Update 03/2020: The movie makes me remember the book, and having both experiences, book and movie, make it more enjoyable and funnier.
Quotes:
“I think is early. Early in our lives. Early in the night. Early in the new year. If you’re counting, you’ll notice the earlys out-number the lates.”
“You have to live your life like you’ll never be sorry. It’s easier just to do the right thing from the start so there’s nothing to apologize for.”
“I think about every student who’s strange or different. Better to keep the unhappy, mad, bad, unpleasant words separate, where you can watch them and make sure they don’t surprise you when you’re not expecting them.”
“We do not remember days, we remember moments.”
