Warcross — Marie Lu

“Death has a terrible habit of cutting straight through every careful line you’ve drawn between your present and your future.”

Synopsis:

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

Opinion:

Everybody has said that Warcross was the best of the world, or at least of the year. And at the end it is not a bad book, but don’t expect too much like I did: believing it was going to be a 5 stars book.

Just reading the synopsis is a way to get trap by the story. And the world that is settle in this book won’t let you down. It is a futurism world, even when Pokemon Go appears, we all imagined. I’ll said that Marie Lu has the ability to make you feel that you are there: watching all the things Emika is seeing in the virtual world. Also all the characters were perfectly described, that you could empathize with them.

Just to finish, Marie Lu has the power to get you into the story and the tournaments; and all the rules that were involve in the game and in the world were really creative. Besides there was a plot twist I didn’t expected. But on the other hand definitely Mari Lu is the worst talking about romance. Really! On those little scenes of romance all I could feel was SHAME. I just hope those clumsiness episodes are not going to be repeated on the second book.

Quotes:

“Death has a terrible habit of cutting straight through every careful line you’ve drawn between your present and your future.”

“I´ve seen Tokyo on TV, online and inside Warcross’s Tokyo Night Level. I’ve fantasized about being here so much, I´ve seen it in my dreams.”

“It is hard to describe loss to someone who has never experienced it, impossible to explain all the ways it changes you. But for those who have, not a single word is needed.”

“When you refuse to ask for help, it tells others that they also shouldn’t ask for help from you. That you look down on them. It’s an insult, Emi, to your friends and peers. So don’t be like that. Let us in.”

Score (4/5)
